The cell phone was originally invented to keep people connected to the home or office without being tied down to a wired connection. Originally known as a “car phone”, the large cellular wireless phone was able to be carried around (we didn't say in a pocket) and had one purpose- talking. Over time, voicemail features, email and fax were added, fashioning the smartphone “mobile device” a popular household obsession.
